Commenting on the latest DfE workforce statistics, Rachael Wardell, Chair of the ADCS Workforce Policy Committee said:

“Being a social worker is one of the most rewarding professions available and can quite literally transform lives. It is encouraging to see an increase in the overall number of child and family social workers and a decrease in national vacancies, however, many local areas are facing their own pressures and we need to ensure that national statistics don’t mask this. Whilst the latest figures are largely positive, we should not assume this is ‘job done’ as the sector is under significant pressure. Vacancy rates remain persistently high and the rise in the number of agency social workers is a real cause for concern. The Department for Education has put forward measures to manage the exorbitant costs associated with the use of agency social workers which are welcome, however, we urge it to move at pace in implementing the statutory guidance.”

“ADCS continues to call on the Department to launch a national social work campaign to promote the value of this transformative profession and the lasting impact it can have on children and families. Beyond recruiting new social workers, we also need a focus on retaining our experienced workforce who have invaluable skills and knowledge. However, we can only do this through long-term national investment in our services.”
